We Salute You—
SGT. THOMAS B. MAXWELL
Nomination Letter:
To Lex Brodie’s Above & Beyond Award,
I would like to nominate SGT Thomas B. Maxwell of the U.S. Army. He is always there to help his fellow soldiers and will do anything you ask of him.
We had just returned from Iraq about 0300 in the morning, October, 2006. The bus was taking us to our barracks for our first nights rest back on American soil. On our way to Schofield Barracks, our bus was following a car which swerved into a truck and smashed into the concrete wall on H2.
Immediately, SGT Maxwell instructed the bus driver to stop and he ran off the bus. As soon as he got to the car, he noticed a young girl on her cell phone refusing to get out of her car. Just then the car went up in flames. SGT Maxwell reached through the window to unbuckle the girls seatbelt and pulled her from the burning car.
By the time help arrived, the car was completely engulfed [in flames]. I believe if SGT Maxwell had not pulled that young girl from the car she may have some serious burns.
Sincerely,
SGT Ludwig, U.S. Army Veteran
